High Chief Wellington Bobo, the Oroupawei of Gbaramatu Kingdom, has pledged unflinching loyalty to Ghanaians residing in Nigeria, declaring himself an integral part of their community rather than a mere sympathiser.
The influential Niger Delta leader made the declaration on Sunday while gracing the 2025 Annual End-of-Year Ceremony of the National Association of Ghanaian Community in Nigeria at Delta Carrier College, Airport Road, Warri, as Special Guest of Honour.
In a rousing address that resonated deeply with the audience, Chief Bobo traced his ideological awakening to Ghana, attributing his political consciousness to the tutelage of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the West African nation’s inaugural President.
“Though Nigerian by birth, my ideological foundation was laid in Ghana through my mentor, former President Kwame Nkrumah, who established the Ideological Institute of Ghana to nurture revolutionary thinking,” the Gbaramatu chieftain stated.
He described the late Ghanaian statesman as an unyielding opponent of Western hegemony who courageously challenged capitalism, imperialism and colonial oppression.
According to him, Africa’s contemporary struggles could be traced to the continent’s failure to shield progressive leaders like Nkrumah from external forces.
“Kwame Nkrumah envisioned Africa’s future, but we betrayed him and allowed the West to remove him. That betrayal explains why Africa remains adrift today,” Chief Bobo lamented.
Expressing profound gratitude to his departed mentor, he declared, “I owe Nkrumah everything. He moulded me. That is why I often say that although Nigeria is my birthplace, I discovered paradise in Ghana.”
The elder statesman, who identified himself as a graduate of the Nkrumah Ideological Institute, also questioned prevailing democratic structures, arguing that authentic governance “of the people, by the people, and for the people” remained largely elusive in practice.
Moved by the mentorship he received in Ghana, Chief Bobo vowed perpetual solidarity with Ghanaians across Nigeria.
“The love my mentor demonstrated compelled me to resolve that wherever I encounter the Ghanaian community in Nigeria, I will champion their cause,” he affirmed.
He concluded with a stirring proclamation: “I stand before you today not merely as your guest, but as one of your own. God bless Nigeria. God bless Ghana.”
The Ghanaian leadership responded with effusive gratitude.
Elder Okuololo Godwin Kofi, NAGHACON National Vice President and Delta State helmsman; Captain Sackitey Joseph, pioneer State President and Warri Chapter Chairman; Engr. Joseph Aryeetey, First Vice Chairman, Warri Chapter; and Mr Richard Owusu, Delta State Public Relations Officer, unanimously hailed Chief Bobo as a father figure and indispensable pillar of support.
They commended his steadfast commitment and assured him of their continued loyalty and intercession.
“Because you have honoured Kwame Nkrumah’s investment in you, God will continue to honour you, shield you, and deploy you for the Ghanaian community and all humanity,” the leaders prayed.
