The Atiku Media Office has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of shrinking Nigeria’s democratic space and deliberately weakening opposition parties in what it described as a plot to impose a de facto one-party system on the country.
The allegation was contained in a statement signed by Paul Ibe of the Atiku Media Office, Abuja, on January 6, 2026, in which the group said Nigerians had endured severe economic hardship and political repression since the current administration came to power.
According to the statement, the ruling All Progressives Congress had allegedly sought to remain dominant not through performance but by systematically weakening alternative political platforms and silencing dissenting voices.
It said concerned political leaders had responded by rallying around the African Democratic Congress as a credible national alternative, warning that recent attempts to interfere in the party’s internal affairs were aimed at destabilising the opposition.
The media office alleged that individuals linked to the Presidency were issuing comments and pressure over the ADC’s choice of a presidential candidate, describing such actions as external interference designed to sabotage the party.
It stressed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar remained a central figure in what it called a national rescue mission, adding that calls for him to step aside amounted to an attack on democratic choice.
The statement noted that the ADC was currently focused on strengthening its structures at ward, local government and state levels, insisting that the party would conduct an open and competitive process when it was time to select its flagbearer.
It also referenced the recent declaration of ADC membership by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Enugu, claiming that the move had triggered threats by government officials who allegedly boasted of plans to undermine the party.
The Atiku Media Office concluded that the ADC would resist intimidation and infiltration, insisting that Nigeria’s democracy would not be surrendered and that opposition forces were determined to challenge the Tinubu-led administration.
