Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), blaming deepening internal disputes and legal battles that he said have undermined the party’s unity and stability.
In a letter addressed to the NNPP chairman of Diso–Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, the governor announced that his resignation would take effect from Sunday, January 25, 2026. The decision was confirmed in a statement issued by his spokesman, Sanusi Bature.
Governor Yusuf thanked the NNPP for the support and opportunity provided since he joined the party in 2022. He described his time with the party as a period of political engagement and collaboration with members across the state.
However, he said ongoing leadership conflicts and court cases have weakened cohesion within the party, widening divisions among members and creating uncertainty at both the state and national levels.
“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination,” he wrote.
The governor added that the growing dissatisfaction among party members had created serious fractures that appear difficult to repair, prompting his decision to step down.
“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable and have generated uncertainty at both state and national levels,” he said.
He said his resignation followed careful consideration and was driven by the desire to protect the public interest.
“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” the letter stated.
The governor said he was leaving the party in good faith, without bitterness, and pledged his continued commitment to the peace and progress of Kano State.
Alongside the governor, 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen also announced their resignation from the NNPP.
The NNPP’s Diso–Chiranchi Ward Secretary, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, confirmed receiving the governor’s letter and praised his achievements in areas such as infrastructure, education, health and economic empowerment. He said the party had no choice but to accept the resignation given the lingering crisis.
“I wish to concur with His Excellency on the lingering crisis in our party. Though we are trying our best to contain it, we have no option than to accept the resignation of one of the most performing governors produced by the NNPP,” he said.
