The Ondo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare and living conditions of members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with the commencement of construction of a new hostel at the Permanent Orientation Camp in Ikare-Akoko.
Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa disclosed this on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 Orientation Course held at the camp.
The governor said work had begun on a 216-bed capacity hostel earlier approved by the state government, adding that the project was progressing steadily and would be completed and opened for use in the shortest possible time.
He assured the corps members that their welfare and safety remained a top priority of his administration, noting that peace and security had been sustained across the state through effective collaboration with security agencies.
He urged them to carry out their assignments with confidence and dedication, assuring them of the government’s full support throughout their service year.
Speaking through the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Segun Henry Omoyofunmi, the governor encouraged the young graduates to see their posting to Ondo State as an opportunity to make meaningful impact beyond the fulfilment of statutory obligations.
He advised them to integrate with their host communities, learn from the people and contribute to grassroots development while serving with integrity and humility.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the NYSC Ondo State Governing Board, represented by the Director of Youth in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Mrs Catherine Okupke, commended previous batches of corps members for their outstanding service across the state.
He expressed confidence that the new intake would sustain the tradition of excellence and leave positive legacies in their places of primary assignment.
The board chairman further advised the corps members to uphold humility, discipline and dedication throughout the orientation exercise and their service year, reminding them that their conduct reflects on the NYSC, their families, educational institutions and personal values.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of the NYSC in Ondo State, Mrs Kuburat Omowumi Bakare, described the orientation course as a critical component of the scheme designed to prepare corps members physically, mentally and emotionally for national service.
She explained that the programme features paramilitary drills, leadership and citizenship training, lectures, social activities, as well as the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme aimed at equipping participants with practical skills for self-reliance after service.
Bakare urged the corps members to participate actively in all camp activities, comply strictly with camp regulations and respect constituted authority, stressing that discipline, humility and teamwork were essential for a successful service year.
She also appealed to employers and community leaders to continue supporting corps members posted to their organisations by providing conducive working environments, accommodation and welfare support, describing such cooperation as vital to the success of the NYSC scheme.
Dignitaries at the event included the Executive Chairman of Akoko North-East Local Government Area, Alhaji Mohammed Mutiu Olawale; the Ondo State Chief Judge, represented by Justice Bankole Akinwumi; and other government officials.
The ceremony marked the formal induction of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 corps members into the National Youth Service Corps as they begin their one-year national service in Ondo State.
