Five persons have reportedly died, while eight others are receiving medical treatment, after allegedly consuming meat laced with poison in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, prompted an urgent response from the Taraba State Police Command.
According to the Command’s Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Mshelizah, preliminary investigations indicate that the meat may have been contaminated with a toxic substance commonly used for rodent control.
“Upon receiving the report, police operatives were immediately deployed to the area. The affected individuals were taken to nearby hospitals, and the deceased were removed for necessary procedures,” Mshelizah said in a statement on Wednesday.
The police further stated that a thorough investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Authorities have urged members of the public to report any suspicious food items or sudden illnesses to the nearest police station or relevant authority to prevent further casualties.
Residents were reassured that efforts are ongoing to identify and bring to justice anyone responsible for the incident.
