Abandoned newborn discovered at Akure community entrance

Residents of Zone 6, Federal Housing Estate in the Shagari area of Akure, Ondo State, were alarmed on Wednesday night after a newborn baby was found abandoned at the entrance of the estate.

The infant was reportedly dropped at the community gate at about 9:35 p.m. by an unidentified person.

The baby was later discovered by a resident, who alerted other members of the estate through the community’s WhatsApp platform.

A male resident and executive member of the Federal Housing Estate Association, who spoke anonymously, said the child might have been intentionally left at the gate for a nearby orphanage to notice.

Efforts to contact the orphanage operator, Tayo Ojueromi, were unsuccessful as his phone line was unreachable at the time.

However, reacting to the development on the community’s WhatsApp group, Ojueromi confirmed that steps had been taken to address the situation.

“We are already there and have notified the appropriate authority. The situation is under control,” he wrote.

He later informed residents that preliminary medical checks indicated possible deformity and other health concerns, adding that the baby would undergo further examination at a medical facility.
