An Akure Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of a suspect, Ejigbo Ibrahim Oni, at the Olokuta Correctional Centre over the alleged possession of a human head believed to have been exhumed from a grave.
Oni was arraigned by the Ondo State Amotekun Corps on a two-count charge relating to unlawful possession of a buried human head and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The prosecuting counsel, DS Msonter-Shagba, told the court that the alleged incident occurred on February 28, 2026, around 12.30 a.m. in Supare Akoko, located in Akoko South West Local Government Area.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant was allegedly caught at night with a human head suspected to have been removed from where it had previously been buried.
Shagba also informed the court that the defendant’s actions were capable of disturbing public peace in the area.
He said the alleged offences violated Sections 329 and 249(1)(d) of the Criminal Law of Ondo State, 2006.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him in court.
Defence counsel, Kehinde Osadugba, pleaded with the court to grant his client bail on lenient conditions, assuring that he would not abscond and would provide responsible sureties.
In her ruling, the presiding magistrate, Damilola Sekoni, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She directed that the sureties must swear to affidavits of means, submit passport photographs of themselves and the defendant, and provide proof of employment as part of the bail conditions.
The court also ruled that one of the sureties must be a Level 14 officer and a house owner residing in the property, with utility bills presented as evidence.
The magistrate further ordered the court registrar and orderly to verify the addresses of the sureties.
However, the defendant could not immediately meet the bail requirements and was subsequently remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre.
The matter was adjourned until May 4, 2026, for hearing.
