A chieftain of the Accord Party, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has petitioned the embassies of the United Kingdom and the United States over alleged threatening remarks credited to a federal lawmaker ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election in Osun State.
Olajengbesi disclosed on Friday that the United Kingdom Embassy had acknowledged receipt of his petition and reached out to him on the matter.
According to him, the petition concerns statements allegedly made by Wole Oke, which he said could undermine electoral integrity and pose risks to lives in the state.
He added that a similar petition had been submitted to the United States Embassy and other international stakeholders monitoring elections in Nigeria.
The legal practitioner stressed the need for credible polls, insisting that any attempt to intimidate voters would be resisted.
The development followed reactions to a viral video in which Oke, who represents Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and serves as Director-General of the All Progressives Congress governorship campaign in Osun, was seen addressing supporters in Esa Oke.
In the footage, the lawmaker warned that individuals not aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s camp should be ready to face consequences, a remark that drew criticism from opposition figures and members of the public.
Reacting, Olajengbesi described the statement as a veiled threat to voters, particularly in Ijesaland, and urged authorities and observers to take note.
He maintained that voters in the state would freely exercise their rights in the forthcoming election.
The August 15 governorship poll is expected to feature the candidate of the APC, Bola Oyebamiji, against the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking re-election.
Observers say the contest is likely to be keenly fought, with political tensions already building ahead of the exercise.
