A Kaduna State High Court has fixed the first week of June 2026 for the hearing of the bail application filed by former governor, Nasir El-Rufai, thereby extending his stay in custody.
The trial judge, Darius Khobo, adjourned the proceedings after taking arguments, with a decision on the bail request now expected at the next sitting.
El-Rufai is being prosecuted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over allegations of financial irregularities and abuse of office during his tenure.
Reacting to the development, his lawyer, Ukpon Akpan, expressed dissatisfaction with the delay in hearing the bail application, suggesting that the repeated adjournments were influenced by political considerations.
The former governor was brought to court under tight security, arriving in the morning alongside officials of the anti-corruption agency and operatives of the Department of State Services.
Supporters of the defendant thronged the court premises during the session, as security agencies mounted surveillance and controlled access to the venue.
Following the adjournment, the stalwart of the African Democratic Congress is expected to remain in detention until the court determines his bail status at the next hearing.
