The Cross River State Government has announced the isolation of a Chinese national at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital following a suspected case of COVID-19.
The state Commissioner for Health, Henry Egbe Ayuk, who confirmed the development in Calabar on Tuesday, said the patient is currently under strict medical supervision.
He stated that the individual entered Nigeria through Lagos on March 17, 2026, and later travelled to Calabar on his way to a factory in Akamkpa Local Government Area, where he reportedly developed symptoms at a local clinic.
Ayuk said the case was swiftly escalated to the teaching hospital, where established isolation protocols were activated, while the state government immediately commenced its emergency health response.
“All necessary steps, including contact tracing and isolation procedures, have been initiated to forestall any spread,” he said, noting collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
He appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring that authorities are on top of the situation and committed to preventing any outbreak.
Similarly, the World Health Organisation coordinator in the state, Olatunde Yewande, and the State Epidemiologist, Inyang Ekpenyong, said surveillance has been strengthened to manage the situation effectively.
They explained that COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2, manifests in symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue and respiratory difficulty, which may range from mild to severe.
The health authorities urged members of the public to adhere to preventive measures, including proper hygiene, vaccination, use of face masks when necessary, and avoiding close contact with suspected cases, stressing that prompt detection and isolation remain key to limiting transmission.
