The Ondo State Police Command has arrested five suspected cultists following the disruption of an alleged secret gathering in Akungba Akoko, Ondo State.
The operation, carried out by the Command’s Special Anti-Cultism Squad on March 27, 2026, was said to have been based on credible intelligence provided by members of the public.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the suspects were reportedly converging in a residential building where they engaged in activities linked to cultism, including chanting slogans associated with secret groups.
The police spokesperson said operatives swiftly mobilised to the location, cordoned off the area, and apprehended the suspects without incident.
Those arrested were identified as Adesuye Dare, Ayeerun Joshua, Ojo Omole, Adu Dele, and Akeju Idowu.
Preliminary investigations, according to the police, revealed that the suspects are members of a group allegedly linked to violent crimes and threats to public peace.
“The suspects are currently in custody and have provided useful information aiding ongoing investigations. Efforts are being intensified to unravel the wider network of the group and prevent any planned criminal activities,” the statement noted.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, commended the оперативes for their prompt response and praised residents for providing timely information that led to the successful operation.
He reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on cultism and other criminal activities, assuring residents of sustained intelligence-driven policing to enhance safety across the state.
Lawal also urged youths to refrain from involvement in cult-related activities, warning that the consequences could be severe. He further advised parents and guardians to closely monitor their wards to prevent them from engaging in unlawful acts.
The police assured that the suspects would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Residents were also encouraged to remain vigilant and continue to support security agencies with credible information, with assurances that such information would be treated confidentially.
