Abdulmajid Mai Rigar Fata, a member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Gwale Constituency, has abandoned the All Progressives Congress for the Nigeria Democratic Congress following his failure to secure the party’s return ticket.
The lawmaker was formally welcomed into the NDC on Thursday by former Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso during a meeting held at the politician’s Maitama residence in Abuja.
Details of the defection were disclosed by Kwankwaso’s aide, Saifullahi Hassan, in a social media post announcing the reception of the lawmaker and other defectors into the party.
Among those who reportedly joined the NDC alongside Mai Rigar Fata were former Gwale Local Government Vice Chairman, Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, and Mahadi Isa Umar.
The legislator was originally elected into the Assembly under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party in 2023 before later defecting to the APC with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Political sources said the latest switch came after the lawmaker was unable to obtain the APC nomination to seek another term in the Assembly.
The development followed a Federal High Court judgment delivered on Thursday, which reportedly eased restrictions on politicians seeking to move to alternative parties ahead of future elections.
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the African Democratic Congress, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the court ruling could trigger fresh defections from the ruling APC as political realignments gather momentum nationwide.
