A 41-year-old Nigerian woman, Franca Wilson, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment by a Ghanaian court for allegedly attempting to fraudulently acquire a Ghanaian passport.
Wilson was convicted by the Adabraka District Court in Accra after she pleaded guilty to charges linked to the use of forged nationality documents.
Reports by Ghanaian media indicated that the court ordered her to serve the jail term with hard labour on three separate counts, with the punishment running simultaneously.
The Ghana Immigration Service confirmed the conviction in an official update released through the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation on Thursday.
According to immigration officials, Wilson was apprehended on April 24, 2026, at the Accra Passport Application Centre after officers noticed irregularities in the personal information she submitted during the passport application process.
The agency disclosed that she was later transferred to the National Enforcement Department of the GIS Headquarters for further investigation.
Investigators reportedly established that the suspect is a Nigerian from Rivers State and not a Ghanaian citizen as claimed in her application documents.
Authorities accused her of presenting a falsified birth certificate which stated that she was born in Somanya, in Ghana’s Eastern Region, to a Ghanaian mother.
The immigration service added that Wilson failed to give satisfactory details about the alleged parent when questioned by investigators.
The incident is one of several recent cases involving Nigerians arrested or prosecuted in Ghana over identity fraud and related offences.
In a similar development in December 2025, two Nigerians, identified as Ike Isaac and Emmanuel Egbe, were jailed for attempting to obtain Ghanaian national identity cards under false identities.
