The Ondo State Police Command has dismissed rumours of an alleged traditional curfew in Akure metropolis, assuring residents that there was no security threat warranting panic in the state capital.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, made this known in a statement issued on Saturday, warning residents against spreading false information capable of causing fear and tension.
The police clarification came hours after the palace of the Deji of Akure also denied reports circulating within the town that a traditional curfew would be imposed across Akure.
In a separate statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deji of Akure, Adeyeye Michael, the palace described the rumour as false and urged residents to ignore it.
“The attention of the palace of the Deji of Akure Land has been drawn to a rumour flying around that there will be a traditional curfew within Akure metropolis today. We wish to state categorically that such information is untrue and does not emanate from the palace,” the statement read.
Similarly, the police said there was no security development justifying apprehension among residents, adding that the rumour was intended to create confusion and unnecessary tension within the state.
The command warned individuals involved in spreading fake news to desist from such acts, stressing that anyone found circulating false information capable of disturbing public peace would face investigation and possible prosecution.
The police and the palace jointly urged residents to remain calm, go about their lawful activities without fear and rely only on verified sources for information, assuring the public of continued efforts to maintain peace and security across Ondo State.
