The Ondo State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that bandits attacked a government grader in Obatedo community, Akure North Local Government Area of the state.
The command described the viral video as misleading, clarifying that the incident did not reflect the current security situation in the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, the command said findings revealed that the footage being circulated was an old incident that occurred more than a month ago.
According to the police, the incident happened at Obatedo, also known as Ago Oyinbo, but no formal complaint was lodged at any police station at the time.
The command further stated that preliminary investigations showed the destruction of the grader was not connected to banditry or attacks by herdsmen as widely speculated.
It explained that the incident was allegedly linked to a disagreement involving some farm owners and local authorities over land allocation to prospective investors.
“The destruction of the grader is believed to have stemmed from the dispute and not from any armed attack,” the statement noted.
The police warned against spreading unverified security information capable of causing panic and tension among residents.
The command urged members of the public to rely on official and credible sources for information relating to security matters in the state.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across Ondo State.
