A Professor of Law at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Prof. Olugbenga Oke-Samuel, is set to deliver the institution's 67th inaugural lecture on June 30, 2026.
The lecture, titled "Environmental Injustice: Redeeming the Time Through Environmental Law Clinics in Nigeria," will focus on the growing concerns surrounding environmental injustice and the role of legal advocacy in addressing environmental challenges across the country.
According to a statement issued by the university's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Chairman of the Ceremonies Committee, Prof. Adebisi Daramola, the event will take place at the institution's Multipurpose Hall, while the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, will preside over the programme.
The university said the lecture would examine how environmental law clinics can serve as practical platforms for advancing environmental rights, supporting affected communities and promoting access to justice for victims of environmental degradation.
Oke-Samuel obtained his Law degree from Lagos State University in 1992 and later earned a Master's degree in Environmental Law from the same institution in 2002. He subsequently bagged a doctorate degree in Law from the University of Zululand, South Africa, in 2014 through a TETFund-sponsored programme.
The legal scholar joined AAUA in 2001 as a Lecturer II in the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law and rose through the ranks before attaining the position of Professor in 2022. During his career, he has occupied several strategic positions within the university, including Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law, Acting Head of Departments and Director of the Quality Assurance Unit.
Beyond administration, Oke-Samuel has built a strong reputation in legal scholarship, authoring books, contributing chapters to academic publications and publishing numerous peer-reviewed articles.
He has also presented research papers at conferences and workshops in several countries across Africa, Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania.
A member of several professional legal and environmental bodies, the professor has received a number of local and international grants and academic awards.
The university noted that the inaugural lecture is expected to attract academics, legal practitioners, students and other stakeholders interested in environmental justice and legal reforms in Nigeria.
