A security guard attached to a commercial bank in Lagos has attracted widespread commendation after returning $9,100 accidentally left behind by a customer.
The guard, Adebanjo Samuel, was said to have discovered the money while carrying out his duties at a First City Monument Bank branch in Marina and promptly ensured it was returned to its owner.
His employer, Proton Security Service Limited, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, describing the gesture as a rare display of honesty and responsibility.
The company noted that Adebanjo's conduct exemplified the core values of integrity and professionalism expected of security personnel entrusted with public confidence.
To celebrate the act, Proton Security announced plans to organise a special recognition ceremony for the guard at its corporate headquarters.
The event is expected to bring together staff members, relatives, industry players and other guests.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director of the firm, Odebunmi Adekunmi, said the guard had distinguished himself through exemplary conduct, adding that his action reflected the ethical culture the organisation strives to promote.
Adebanjo, while reacting to the praise, said returning the money was the only right thing to do.
He explained that he was raised to value honesty and would not have acted differently regardless of the amount involved.
Also commenting, the company's Director of Business Development and Strategy, Olabisi Familusi, said the incident highlights the enduring value of integrity in society.
He added that the guard's decision should serve as an inspiration to young Nigerians and a reminder that good character remains invaluable.
