A New York court has sentenced a 44-year-old man to five years in prison for sexually violating the body of a deceased passenger aboard a subway train in Manhattan.
The convict, Felix Rojas, was handed the jail term on Wednesday after admitting to charges stemming from the abuse of Jorge Gonzalez, a 37-year-old man who died after losing consciousness on an R train in April 2025.
According to reports, investigators relied on surveillance footage that allegedly showed Rojas approaching Gonzalez after noticing that he was unresponsive. Authorities also said the footage captured him searching through the victim's pockets during the incident.
Prosecutors said Rojas later surrendered to law enforcement authorities roughly three weeks after the occurrence when investigators circulated images obtained from security cameras. He reportedly denied wrongdoing when initially questioned.
In addition to the prison term, the court ordered that Rojas remain under supervised monitoring for 15 years upon completion of his sentence.
Authorities further disclosed that Rojas, identified by immigration officials as a Mexican national, had previously made multiple attempts to enter the United States illegally.
The victim, Gonzalez, had reportedly spent nearly two decades in the United States, taking on various jobs to support family members back home in Mexico.
Relatives described him as a dedicated father and hardworking individual who worked in construction, restaurants and other service-related occupations to provide for his loved ones.
The case generated widespread public attention across the United States, with many expressing concern over safety and monitoring within New York City's public transportation system following the disturbing incident.
