Suspected bandits have killed a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and abducted his daughter during a fresh attack on Odo-Ere, the headquarters of Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, has heightened fears among residents of Kogi West, a region that has witnessed a series of violent attacks in recent weeks.
Sources in the community identified the deceased officer simply as Ayo, saying the attackers stormed his residence before opening fire on him and whisking away his eldest daughter.
According to eyewitness accounts, the NSCDC operative sustained a gunshot wound to the head during the attack.
Residents said he was rushed to a nearby medical facility but died before receiving treatment due to severe blood loss. His remains were later deposited in a mortuary.
The gunmen reportedly fled the area with the abducted victim, leaving residents in panic over the worsening security situation in the community.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to release an official statement on the incident.
The latest attack comes barely one week after armed men invaded Ayegunle-Igun in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, where two persons were killed and more than 30 others abducted.
Three days after that incident, another attack was reported in Ikoyi community in Ijumu Local Government Area during a burial ceremony. The assailants allegedly killed three people and abducted several others.
Residents said none of the victims taken during the previous attacks had been rescued, raising concerns over the growing wave of kidnappings and killings across Kogi West.
Community leaders and residents have called on security agencies and the state government to intensify efforts to tackle the persistent attacks and restore confidence among the people.
