A 14-year-old student of Police Secondary School, Minna, Yahaya Ibrahim Tafida, has lost his life after he was reportedly struck by lightning during a rainstorm in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday evening at a football field within the Government Girls' Day Secondary School in Lapai, where the teenager and his friends had gathered to play.
A resident of the area, Mohammed Musa, told journalists that the victim was caught in a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds while playing football.
According to him, the boys sought refuge under a tree when the weather suddenly worsened.
He explained that moments later, a lightning strike hit the location, killing Tafida instantly.
"The rain started unexpectedly, and because of the strong wind, they could not make it home on time. They decided to stay under a tree for cover, but lightning struck and the boy died immediately," Musa said.
The incident has thrown residents of the community into mourning, with many expressing shock over the teenager's sudden death.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Niger State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. Calls and text messages sent to the command's spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, were not responded to.
