Suspected bandits have abducted four women, including a pregnant woman, during an attack on Maikadauri village in Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State.
Residents said the assailants stormed the community on Monday night, causing panic among villagers and whisking away the victims to an unknown destination.
Sources within the community disclosed that one person was killed during the attack, while a local vigilante member identified simply as Amos sustained a gunshot injury while attempting to repel the attackers.
According to residents, Amos joined other security volunteers in responding to distress calls from villagers when he was shot in the leg by the gunmen.
A resident of Kontagora, Habibu Mohammed, lamented the persistent attacks on settlements located on the outskirts of the town, noting that communities have continued to face security threats despite ongoing efforts by security agencies.
He urged both the state and federal governments to intensify measures aimed at protecting residents and curbing the activities of criminal groups operating in the area.
The latest incident came barely 24 hours after two young men, identified as Sidiq Musa and Bashar Bisalla, were reportedly shot dead by armed men while gathering firewood in a forest in Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area of the state.
Residents of Wawa alleged that no fewer than seven young men have lost their lives in similar attacks in the forest over the past few months while engaging in firewood collection.
Attempts to obtain an official response from the Niger State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. Calls placed to the command's spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, were not answered, while a text message sent to him had yet to receive a response.
