The Katsina State Police Command has arrested a man for allegedly repackaging expired powdered milk and selling it to unsuspecting members of the public in Funtua Local Government Area of the state.
The command's spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, stating that operatives attached to the Makera Police Division carried out the arrest following credible intelligence.
According to the police, the suspect was apprehended on June 14 while in possession of 10 bags of powdered milk believed to be unfit for human consumption.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly mixed expired milk products with genuine ones before repackaging them in counterfeit bags for distribution and sale.
The police said the recovered items had been secured as exhibits, while the suspect remains in custody pending the conclusion of investigations.
Sadiq-Aliyu noted that the suspect would be prosecuted after the investigation, adding that the alleged offences violate provisions of the Penal Code Law 2021 relating to the adulteration and sale of harmful food products.
He reiterated that the command would ensure the suspect is charged before a competent court once investigations are completed.
The Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar-Fage, warned traders and business operators against engaging in activities capable of endangering public health.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious commercial activities to security agencies for necessary action.
