The National Youth Service Corps has stopped posting corps members to three local government areas in Kebbi State due to growing security concerns.
The NYSC State Coordinator in Kebbi, Bala Dabo Kagarko, disclosed this on Wednesday while addressing journalists at the temporary orientation camp in Basura, Jega Local Government Area.
According to him, corps members will no longer be deployed to Augie, Arewa and Sakaba local government areas as part of measures aimed at safeguarding their lives.
Kagarko explained that security challenges also prompted the relocation of the state’s orientation camp from Dakingari to the temporary facility in Basura.
He said the decision was taken to ensure a safer environment for prospective corps members undergoing the mandatory orientation programme.
The coordinator expressed concern over the steady decline in the number of corps members posted to Kebbi, noting that the development was affecting critical sectors across the state.
He lamented that hospitals were increasingly finding it difficult to receive medical personnel through the scheme, while schools and other public institutions were also facing shortages of corps members.
“Kebbi currently receives the lowest number of corps members in the country,” he said, adding that several appeals had been made to relevant authorities to address the situation.
Kagarko, however, noted that the state was still awaiting a response to its requests aimed at improving corps members’ deployment to Kebbi.
The NYSC official stressed that the safety and welfare of corps members remained the organisation’s top priority in determining deployment decisions across the country.
