The Osun State Police Command has detained three suspects in connection with the alleged possession of a human skull believed to have been stolen from a family burial site.
The command's spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed the development in a statement on Friday, saying the arrests followed an investigation into the reported desecration of a grave in the state.
According to Ojelabi, the case was reported at the Oba-Ile Police Station on June 17 after a resident discovered that the grave of his late elder brother had been vandalised during a visit to the family compound two days earlier.
The complainant reportedly found that the deceased's skull had been removed by yet-to-be-identified persons.
Following the complaint, detectives commenced an investigation, which led to the arrest of one of the suspects, 40-year-old Ogunsola Ojo.
Police said Ojo allegedly provided useful information during interrogation, leading investigators to identify three other suspected accomplices as Ayeloja Lattef, Azeez Rasheed and Kunle Fatai, who remains at large.
The spokesperson added that a search conducted at Fatai's residence resulted in the recovery of the suspected human skull, which was hidden inside an uncompleted building located beside the house.
He said the recovered skull had been taken into police custody and registered as an exhibit pending the conclusion of investigations.
Ojelabi noted that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He assured members of the public that all those found culpable would be charged in court after the investigation is concluded.
