The Yobe State Police Command has taken two persons into custody following the alleged killing of a newborn baby and the disposal of the child's remains in Damaturu, the state capital.
The command disclosed that officers attached to the Violent Crime Response Unit launched an investigation after receiving information about the incident on Monday afternoon.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, preliminary findings suggested that a woman suspected to have recently delivered a baby allegedly ended the infant's life before concealing the body.
He explained that the remains were reportedly placed inside a box and later abandoned behind a mosque located in the Anguwar Boka area of Damaturu.
The police spokesman said, “Initial investigation revealed that a female suspect who recently gave birth allegedly strangled the newborn baby and concealed the body in a box, which was subsequently dumped behind a mosque in Anguwar Boka.”
Abdulkarim added that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the case and were currently assisting investigators with efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, condemned the act, describing it as cruel and unacceptable.
Jibrin reiterated the command's commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable members of society, warning that anyone found responsible would face the full weight of the law.
He further stressed that every child has a right to life, protection and dignity, noting that the investigation was still ongoing.
