Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested six suspected cultists during an intelligence-driven operation in Akungba and Iwaro Akoko communities, recovering weapons, charms and other items believed to be linked to cult activities.
The suspects were apprehended by officers of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad during a raid carried out on June 16 following intelligence reports on the activities of suspected cult members in the area.
The command identified the suspects as Damilare Kayode, 30; Adejoro Godwin, 30; Adedapo Ogunro, 36; Chisom Okechukwu, 21; Ademulegun Imisi, 26; and Odugunle Bukola, 21.
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects were allegedly connected to unlawful confraternities operating within the Akoko axis of the state.
Items recovered during the operation included five battle axes, a jackknife, several charms and suspected cult paraphernalia such as boots, yellow singlets and face caps.
The police said the exhibits had been taken into custody and would form part of ongoing investigations aimed at uncovering the activities of the group and identifying other suspected members.
A statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the suspects would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Felix Ohagwu, commended the operatives for the successful operation and reaffirmed the command's commitment to tackling cultism, violent crimes and other forms of criminality.
Ohagwu said the command would continue to deploy intelligence-led policing, strategic raids and visibility patrols to ensure criminals have no safe haven in the state.
He also urged residents to support security agencies with timely and credible information that could aid efforts to maintain law and order across Ondo State.
