A marital dispute took a dramatic turn at a Kaduna Shari'a Court on Tuesday after a man, Ahmad Tijani, demanded N500,000 from his estranged wife before agreeing to end their marriage, insisting that the N80,000 dowry he originally received was no longer enough to enable him remarry.
The woman, Firdausi Shu'aibu, had approached the Magajin Gari Shari'a Court seeking the dissolution of their marriage through Khul'i, an Islamic divorce process that allows a wife to secure her freedom by returning the dowry paid at the time of marriage.
Shu'aibu told the court she was prepared to refund the full N80,000 dowry paid by her husband, saying she could not offer anything beyond that amount.
Tijani, however, requested time to consult with family elders, adding that if no settlement was reached, he would only accept N500,000 from his wife.
According to him, the amount was necessary because the original dowry would no longer be sufficient for him to marry another wife due to the current economic situation.
The presiding judge, Mu'awiyya Shehu, asked the petitioner whether she was willing to meet the demand, but she declined, maintaining that she would only refund the exact amount she received as dowry.
Following the disagreement, the court adjourned the matter until July 30 to hear the husband's justification for demanding an amount far above the original dowry.
