The 2027 Senate election in Ondo North is shaping up as a contest over more than political affiliation. For constituents across the district, it presents an opportunity to demand a representation that is closer to the people, more accountable and focused on delivering measurable development.
At the centre of that proposition is Prince Foluso Mayowa Adefemi, popularly known as FMA, the African Democratic Congress candidate for the Ondo North Senatorial District.
FMA is seeking to convince supporters that the district can secure stronger representation by moving away from a system where constituents see little tangible impact from the office they entrusted with their mandate.
His approach is built around a simple principle: a senator should not be judged by the prestige of the office, but by how effectively the office is used to improve the lives of the people.
This is where FMA’s long history of philanthropy becomes significant. Before seeking elective office, he had already committed personal resources to supporting students, young people, families in difficult circumstances and other members of his community.
Rather than presenting charity as a substitute for government, however, FMA’s proposed Senate agenda seeks to use legislative representation to attract government programmes and development opportunities to Ondo North.
Education is expected to receive particular attention. Beyond continuing his support for students, FMA plans to push for more educational interventions, scholarships, skills-development programmes and opportunities that can help young people acquire qualifications relevant to today’s economy.
Youth unemployment is another challenge he intends to confront. His proposed representation will seek partnerships with government agencies and relevant institutions to bring vocational training, entrepreneurship support, grants, apprenticeships and employment-oriented programmes closer to constituents.
The objective is to move young people from waiting for government jobs to having access to the skills, capital and opportunities required to create sustainable livelihoods.
FMA also intends to make economic empowerment a major part of his constituency agenda. His background in business, including the maritime sector, has exposed him to the realities of investment, enterprise development and job creation.
He wants that experience to inform his efforts to attract federal interventions for farmers, traders, artisans, entrepreneurs and small businesses operating across Ondo North.
Healthcare is another area requiring urgent attention. FMA plans to advocate for interventions that will strengthen primary healthcare delivery, improve access to medical support and attract assistance for communities where residents still struggle to obtain affordable and quality healthcare.
Infrastructure will equally feature prominently in his agenda. The proposed focus includes pursuing federal intervention in roads, electricity, water and other basic facilities that affect economic activity and the everyday lives of residents.
For FMA, constituency representation should also involve ensuring that people know what their senator is doing on their behalf. He therefore intends to promote regular engagement with constituents and greater transparency regarding projects, interventions and legislative activities.
Sports development is another area where he hopes to create opportunities for young people. His experience in sports administration, including his leadership roles in gymnastics, has given him insight into the potential of sports as a tool for youth development, employment and international exposure.
FMA’s argument for a change in representation comes amid complaints from some constituents that the incumbent’s tenure has not delivered the level of visible impact they expected. Rather than making the election solely about criticism of the incumbent, FMA is presenting a programme built around what he says should be the priorities of the people.
His proposed agenda places emphasis on education, healthcare, job creation, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, agriculture, infrastructure, sports and access to federal opportunities.
The broader message is that Ondo North should have a senator who remains connected to the communities that elected him and who actively pursues opportunities for them at the federal level.
FMA is therefore asking voters to consider his record of service alongside his plans for public office. His campaign maintains that the same commitment that has driven his philanthropic activities can be expanded into a more structured constituency development programme if he receives the mandate.
For Ondo North, the 2027 election offers an opportunity to determine what kind of representation it wants for the next political cycle. For FMA, the choice is clear: a Senate mandate should translate into practical opportunities, stronger advocacy and development that constituents can see and feel.
