The Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria, Nasiru Gusau Marafa, has been killed by gunmen in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
Marafa was reportedly attacked and shot while returning from Gusau on Sunday, according to a notice issued by the university.
The institution’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi, announced the death in a statement on Sunday, expressing shock over the sudden loss of the senior administrator.
The university said Marafa died on September 6, 2026, describing him as a committed staff member who contributed significantly to the institution’s development.
Marafa became the university’s Bursar in September 2022 after serving in various capacities within the institution.
Under his tenure, the university said he demonstrated dedication to his duties and played an important role in the administration of its financial affairs.
The management commiserated with his family, colleagues and members of the university community, while stating that details of his burial would be made available by the family.
Efforts to obtain the reaction of the Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Yazid, were unsuccessful as calls to his telephone line were not answered at the time of filing this report.
