A man identified as Basit has died after being attacked by residents following an alleged hit-and-run incident on Lagos Island, Lagos State, with his wedding reportedly only two weeks away.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night in the Patey area, began when Basit allegedly struck a pedestrian with his vehicle and continued driving without stopping.
Residents reportedly gave chase and caught up with him, after which the situation escalated into a mob attack.
A resident who witnessed the incident said the victim was driving from the Freeman Street axis when the vehicle allegedly hit a man attempting to cross the road.
The source said residents became angry when Basit allegedly failed to stop after the collision, prompting some people to pursue him until he was apprehended.
Another resident, Afolabi Lawal, said the mob assaulted Basit with sticks and bottles, particularly targeting his head.
Lawal explained that the injuries left Basit unconscious, adding that he later died from the assault. The mob reportedly fled after discovering that he had stopped responding.
Meanwhile, a police source confirmed that some suspects had been arrested over the incident and that Basit’s remains had been taken to a morgue.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, could not be reached for comment as calls to her line went unanswered and a text message had not been acknowledged when the report was filed.
