JUST IN: Ondo police arrest three over N42m vehicle, UK visa fraud

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three suspected fraudsters over alleged fraudulent transactions involving a Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 valued at N23m and £10,000, approximately N19m, reportedly paid for United Kingdom student visas.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday on behalf of the command, adding that the suspects were arrested in separate operations by detectives attached to the Monitoring Unit.

Two of the suspects, identified as Bisi Vado and another known as Small Autos, allegedly posed as legitimate vehicle dealers and obtained a Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 from a man identified as Michael Oluwafemi.

The duo allegedly collected the vehicle, valued at N23m, on the pretext of helping the complainant sell it and facilitate the importation of another vehicle from overseas. They were also accused of collecting an additional N4m for the purported transaction.

However, the suspects allegedly failed to fulfil the agreement and instead converted the vehicle and money to personal use, prompting the complainant to report the matter to the police.

In a separate case, the command arrested Gbenga Omileye over an alleged £10,000 visa scam dating back to 2022. He reportedly collected the money from Akinjomo Peter to secure UK student visas for Peter’s wife and niece.

Jimoh said the suspect subsequently forwarded an admission letter purportedly issued for the proposed study arrangement, but checks allegedly showed that the document was fraudulent. Omileye was arrested on August 31 following sustained investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, commended the detectives for their efforts and warned members of the public to exercise caution before entrusting valuable property or large sums of money to individuals, particularly in vehicle, overseas travel, education and visa transactions.

The command said the suspects remained under investigation and would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigations.
