‘My wife threatened to poison our son, have me jailed’ — Husband tells court

A man identified as Mauroof has asked a Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to dissolve his marriage, alleging that his wife, Latifat, had subjected him and members of the family to persistent threats and hostility.

Mauroof told the court that his wife allegedly threatened to poison their first child and repeatedly warned that she would implicate him and ensure that he was sent to prison.

The plaintiff alleged that his wife’s conduct had created constant tension in the home, claiming that she frequently picked quarrels with him and was hostile towards their children and neighbours.

He said, “My Lord, I regret marrying my wife because she turned my life upside down after she moved into my house.

“She does not respect me as the head of the family. She is unruly, hostile and constantly insults me.

“Our home is always in turmoil because she looks for every opportunity to fight me.”

Mauroof further alleged that the couple’s first child left home after Latifat allegedly threatened to poison him, adding that she had also repeatedly threatened to get him into trouble.

He claimed that his wife’s alleged hostility extended to their neighbours, who, according to him, often confronted her over her behaviour.

The plaintiff also accused Latifat of engaging in fetish practices, alleging that his brother once caught her collecting sand from the four corners of their residence for what he described as a diabolical purpose.

Mauroof said he had reached the end of his tolerance and no longer wished to continue with the marriage, urging the court to terminate the union and restrain his wife from allegedly threatening or interfering with his private life.

Latifat was absent from the proceedings despite reportedly being served with the court processes.

The court president, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, subsequently adjourned the matter and ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served on the defendant.
