A bank manager has been killed while two female students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, were reportedly abducted by suspected kidnappers during an attack on the university campus.
The banker, identified as Ossy of Polaris Bank, was said to have been shot by the assailants after being confronted while conveying his children to the institution.
The incident happened when the banker arrived at FUTO to drop off his children, who are students of the university.
According to the bank, the children escaped during the attack, but their father was fatally wounded by the hoodlums.
Polaris Bank, through its Head of Brand Management and Corporate Communication, Rasheed Bolarinwa, expressed grief over the incident and sympathised with the deceased’s family, colleagues and friends.
The bank said, “We understand that the matter is being investigated by the relevant law enforcement agencies, and we trust that the circumstances surrounding the incident will be thoroughly established.”
FUTO management also confirmed the killing, describing the deceased as a visitor to the university. It disclosed that two female students were taken away during the attack and said efforts were ongoing with security agencies to secure their release.
Following the incident, the university management met with the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, to address the security situation around the institution and adjoining communities.
Bosso assured the university of strengthened security operations around FUTO and neighbouring areas, including Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, Obinze and Nekede.
The university subsequently appealed for calm and vigilance, while warning students against unnecessary movement and activities capable of disrupting peace on campus.
The institution also reiterated its ban on rowdy gatherings, road blockades, destruction of property and other disorderly activities, following reports that some students had planned a protest over the killing.
As of the time of filing the report, the police had not disclosed any arrest in connection with the killing and alleged abduction.
