We’ll be retired from politics if Tinubu wins – Amaechi tells ADC leaders

The Vice-Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Rotimi Amaechi, has urged members of the opposition party to intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 presidential election, warning that a victory for President Bola Tinubu could end the political careers of many ADC leaders.

As reported by DAILY TRUST, Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation, spoke on Wednesday at the ADC National Women League Conference in Abuja. His remarks were reported by Daily Trust and are consistent with the ADC’s identification of him as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

He challenged party members to return to their states and wards to mobilise voters, stressing that victory would depend on the ability of the opposition to secure support at the grassroots.

Amaechi said the experience of the 2015 election, when the All Progressives Congress defeated the Peoples Democratic Party at the federal level, demonstrated the importance of women and grassroots mobilisation in determining electoral outcomes.

He urged the women to work actively in their communities and wards, saying, “If APC wins 2027 elections, we are retired from politics. So if you don’t want us to retire from politics, we must go home.”

The former minister also urged ADC supporters to mobilise votes across the country, saying he would personally campaign in states where governorship elections would also be held.

Amaechi further criticised the economic situation in the country, citing rising living costs, school fees and the number of out-of-school children. He called on voters, particularly women in the North, to participate actively in the 2027 election.

Also speaking, Titi Atiku Abubakar urged the women not to be intimidated and asked them to engage their friends, neighbours and communities in support of the ADC.

She also complained about rising prices of medicines and other essential goods, while calling on women to resist attempts to influence their votes through food or other inducements and instead participate actively in the electoral process.
