A Kaduna woman, Fatima Jibril, has approached a Shari’a Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, seeking custody of her two-year-old child and a monthly maintenance payment of N50,000 from her former husband, Muhammad Mahmud.
Through her counsel, Abubakar Jibril, the woman told the court that her marriage to Mahmud was dissolved in January and that the child had since been taken to the father’s mother.
The lawyer urged the court to return the child to his mother, while directing the father to provide for the child’s education, healthcare and other basic needs.
He maintained that the mother was willing to take custody of the child but required financial support from the father to meet the child’s welfare needs.
Responding through his lawyer, Mahmud Ibrahim, the defendant said he could not afford the N50,000 monthly maintenance being demanded.
He told the court that he was only capable of paying N25,000 per month towards the child’s upkeep.
The presiding judge, Malam Mu’awiyya Shehu, asked Fatima whether she would accept the N25,000 offer from her former husband.
The woman agreed to the proposed amount, following which the judge adjourned the matter until September 22, 2026, for ruling.
