Alagbaka Stench: Ondo govt traces odour to poultry, goat farm

The Ondo State Government has moved against a poultry and goat farm in Akure after tracing a persistent offensive odour around Alagbaka G.R.A. Extension to waste allegedly discharged from the facility.

The action followed complaints by the management and workers of Crest 106.1 FM, who reported that the stench had affected their working environment and caused discomfort to visitors and guests.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr Tob Loko, led officials of the ministry, including the Permanent Secretary, Mr Akin Omotola, on an inspection of the area on Monday following the complaints.

The inspection team traced the affected route from the radio station through Rev. Remi Olu Adegboyegun Avenue and MBC Akinbileje Avenue before reaching the farming facility identified as the suspected source of the pollution.

Officials reportedly discovered that waste generated from the poultry and goat-rearing activities was being conveyed through a pipe into the drainage network, with the discharge flowing towards nearby residential and commercial areas.

The ministry said the practice was responsible for the spread of the offensive smell through the drainage system and into adjoining premises, including the environment around the radio station.

Following the discovery, Loko ordered the issuance of an abatement notice to the operator of the facility, directing compliance with relevant environmental regulations.

The commissioner warned that the government would sanction activities that pollute the environment or endanger public health, regardless of the size or location of the offending facility. He added that the ministry would continue to investigate credible complaints and take action before environmental problems escalate.
