Man allegedly stabs customer to death over N500 phone balance

A 20-year-old man, Lawisi Safiyanu, has been arrested by the Jigawa State Police Command for allegedly stabbing a 25-year-old customer, Muhammad Abba, to death during a dispute over a N500 balance on a mobile phone purchase.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists, saying the incident occurred around 12:30am on October 1, 2026, at Chamo village in Dutse Local Government Area of the state.

According to the police, preliminary investigations showed that Abba had bought a mobile phone from Safiyanu for N1,500 but paid N1,000, leaving an outstanding balance of N500.

The unpaid balance reportedly sparked an argument between the two men, which later escalated when Safiyanu allegedly picked up a knife and stabbed Abba.

The victim was subsequently rushed to the Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital, Dutse, where he was receiving treatment when he reportedly died from his injuries.

Following the incident, police operatives arrested Safiyanu and recovered the knife allegedly used in the attack as an exhibit.

The command said investigations into the case had been concluded and that the suspect had been charged before a court for prosecution.

The police did not disclose further details about the charge or the suspect's plea.
