A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room in the town, with the police arresting three people over the incident.

Uwuigbe was reportedly found dead after checking into the hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, on Sunday, October 5, with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

According to the police, the lecturer had engaged the services of the woman before sending her out of the room to purchase water. She was said to have returned later and found him unresponsive on the bed.

The incident was reported to the Edo State Police Command at about 8pm, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.

The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident, saying the hotel owner, manager and the woman who was with the deceased had been taken into custody.

Ikoedem said the three suspects were assisting the police with the investigation, adding that authorities were working to establish what led to the lecturer’s death.

The deceased’s remains have reportedly been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary for preservation and further examination.

Meanwhile, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of the institution’s academic staff but said the incident had no connection with the university.

He explained that the incident occurred outside the university premises and described the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death as a private matter.
