'Presidency not welfare center' - APC criticizes Amaechi over poverty claim

The All Progressives Congress has criticised the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, over his recent remarks about his financial difficulties, saying the presidency is not meant to provide personal welfare for politicians.

The APC, in a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, also took aim at Amaechi’s claim that he could not afford medication for his late mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi.

The ruling party described the former Rivers State governor as someone who had allegedly become dependent on public office, questioning his ability to sustain himself outside government.

Amaechi, who previously served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, is the ADC’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

While expressing condolences over the death of Amaechi’s mother, the APC mocked the former minister over his reported financial difficulties and sarcastically wished him success in securing employment.

The party recalled Amaechi’s previous comments about struggling financially after leaving office, arguing that his latest disclosure about his mother’s medical expenses had further raised questions about his financial situation.

Morka accused the former governor of spending decades in public office and alleged that he had failed to build a sustainable means of livelihood outside government patronage.

The APC further questioned Amaechi’s suitability for the vice-presidential position, alleging that his request for another opportunity in government amounted to an attempt to return to public resources.

It said Nigerians should not be expected to use the presidency as a means of solving the personal financial challenges of politicians, insisting that public office should be about service rather than personal sustenance.
