President Bola Tinubu has approved lifetime salary payments for retired Comptrollers-General and Deputy Comptrollers-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has said.
Tunji-Ojo disclosed this on Friday during the closing ceremony of the Specialised Border Control and Immigration Management System training at the Immigration Service headquarters in Abuja.
The minister also said the President had cleared promotion backlogs across agencies under the Ministry of Interior, adding that more than 50,000 personnel had been promoted within three years.
He said the administration had also expanded recruitment, with at least 40,000 personnel recruited at once, while improvements had been made to salaries and allowances, including hazard and peculiar allowances.
Tunji-Ojo said the welfare of retired senior immigration officers had received particular attention, noting that their pensions had previously been inadequate.
He explained that retired Comptrollers-General, who formerly received about N130,000 in pension payments, would now benefit from the President’s approval of lifetime salaries for them and their deputies.
The minister praised Tinubu for what he described as unprecedented support for security agencies, saying the President had fulfilled several requests aimed at improving the welfare and working conditions of personnel.
He urged officers to reciprocate the administration’s support through dedication to duty and effective service delivery, stressing that their responsibility was to ensure Nigerians were satisfied with their services.
Tunji-Ojo further described Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda as a long-term plan focused on strengthening institutions, saying the President’s policies were designed to deliver lasting benefits beyond his tenure.
