Woman sues ex-husband over unpaid dowry

A housewife, Ummulkhairi Lawal, has approached a Sharia Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, seeking an order compelling her former husband, Isa Haruna, to pay her outstanding dowry.

Lawal told the court that Haruna owed her N120,000, which she said was the agreed amount of her dowry.

She explained that although Haruna divorced her on March 27, he had yet to fulfil the financial obligation, prompting her to seek the court’s intervention.

“I am asking the court to direct him to pay the dowry,” she told the court.

Responding to the claim, Haruna, a commercial tricycle operator, pleaded for more time to raise the money.

“I am a commercial tricycle driver. I am pleading with the court to give me four months to look for the money and pay her,” he said.

Delivering his ruling, the presiding judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, said Islamic law requires a woman’s dowry to be settled without unnecessary delay.

The judge subsequently ordered Haruna to pay Lawal the N120,000 dowry agreed upon by the former couple.

Abdullahi, however, gave the defendant until October 5, 2026, to settle the outstanding amount.
