The Ondo State Police Command has taken three young men into custody for allegedly staging a false kidnapping to obtain money from a family member.
Police spokesperson DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola disclosed that the incident was initially reported as the abduction of 22-year-old truck driver, Tobi Oluwatuyi, at Ilu Abo in Akure.
Investigators from the Anti-Kidnapping Squad launched a probe but later discovered that the supposed victim had arranged the plot with two others, identified as 20-year-old Jubril Abu and 21-year-old Segun Oluwatuyi.
The suspects allegedly pressured the family for a ₦1.5m ransom, which was paid under the impression that Tobi had truly been kidnapped.
According to the Command, all three men admitted to their roles in the planned extortion and will face prosecution once inquiries are completed.
Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, cautioned residents against paying ransoms and advised the public to promptly report kidnap-related incidents to security agencies.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to keeping Ondo State secure and urged citizens to make use of the Police emergency contact channels for timely assistance.
