The Nigeria Police Force has instituted criminal proceedings against the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, and two other individuals over allegations of illegally accessing a woman’s telephone and computer network.
The other defendants are Mufutau Ibrahim and Tajudeen Opoola, according to a charge sheet filed by the Inspector-General of Police at the Federal High Court in Lagos on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The charges, dated October 2, alleged that the defendants conspired to intercept computer data belonging to Dr Adeola Kehinde without her authorisation. The alleged incident reportedly occurred on August 23, 2026, at the university in Ekiti State.
In one of the counts, the defendants were accused of jointly attempting to intercept the transmission of Kehinde’s computer data and its contents without lawful permission.
Another count alleged that they used technical means to unlawfully access data transmitted through her computer network.
The police further accused the defendants of causing unauthorised alterations to information stored in Kehinde’s computer system or network. The allegations were brought under provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.
In an additional count, the defendants were accused of abusing their offices by allegedly interfering with Kehinde’s telephone and computer network without legal authority, an act the charge sheet said was prejudicial to her rights under Section 104 of the Criminal Code Act.
The charge document did not state when the defendants would be arraigned or indicate whether they had entered pleas. The allegations have yet to be determined by the court.
