The Executive Chairman of Akoko South West Local Government Area, Hon. Ayo Ajana, yesterday launched a special welfare scheme targeting 300 aged residents across the council, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to improve the wellbeing of vulnerable citizens.
The flag-off ceremony, held at the council secretariat in Oka Akoko, marked the formal introduction of the initiative described by Ajana as a practical demonstration of democratic dividends and his commitment to inclusive and people-centred governance.
According to him, the beneficiaries elderly citizens who have contributed immensely to the growth of their communities have already received ₦20,000 monthly arrears from August to date, amounting to ₦80,000 each.
The package, he said, is aimed at easing daily burdens and improving living conditions of senior citizens.
Ajana stressed that the programme sends “a clear message that senior citizens in Akoko South West are not forgotten.”
He expressed deep appreciation to Ondo State Governor, Hon. Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for creating an enabling environment that empowers local governments to implement impactful, community-driven programmes.
Highlighting his achievements within ten months in office, Ajana said his administration had graded roads across all 15 wards of the council.
He noted the rehabilitation and reticulation of the solar-powered borehole at Korowa in Oka to enhance water supply, as well as the construction of two single-cell box culverts at Owase/Iboje Quarters to improve drainage.
The chairman also confirmed that Imesi Road in Supare Akoko had been filled and graded, while the oldest building in the council secretariat—housing the Works, Community and NYSC units had undergone full renovation.
He added that new vehicles had been procured and distributed to traditional rulers, while a Toyota Hiace bus had been acquired for the legislative arm of the council.
More development projects, he assured, were ongoing to promote sustainable growth.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Olusin of Owalusin, Iwaro Oka Akoko, HRM Oba Stephen Oloruntele Ogunoye I, described the welfare scheme as “a landmark step” for grassroots governance.
He commended both Governor Aiyedatiwa and Ajana for prioritising the wellbeing of the elderly and reaffirmed the support of monarchs for their leadership.
The monarch also lauded Ajana’s infrastructural interventions, saying his administration had brought “visible and meaningful progress” to communities in the council.
Representatives of the beneficiaries, Alhaji Ishola Lawal and Chief Mrs. Alonge Abigail, praised the initiative, describing it as the first of its kind in the local government. They thanked Governor Aiyedatiwa and Ajana for “remembering and uplifting the aged.”
