A fire outbreak triggered by a pressing iron on Saturday affected a residential building in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The incident occurred at about 1:50 pm at No. 4, opposite Layo Hotel along Coca-Cola Road, within the Ilorin metropolis.
The affected building, it was learnt, is a storey structure comprising four-bedroom flats, with the fire impacting one of the flats.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said the outbreak originated from a laundry shop where a pressing iron was plugged in and left unattended.
“The incident involved a storey building comprising four flats, where one flat was affected by the fire.
“Firefighters swiftly arrived at the scene and successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the remaining flats within the building.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by a pressing iron that was plugged in and left unattended in a laundry shop, which led to overheating and ignition of nearby combustible materials,” he said.
Adekunle added that the Director of the State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, advised residents and business owners to always switch off and unplug electrical appliances when not in use.
He warned that negligence in handling heat-generating appliances such as pressing irons remained a major cause of preventable fire incidents, urging the public to adopt safety-conscious practices at all times.
