The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old housewife, Misturah Bada, and her alleged accomplice, Adedamola Daniel, over a staged kidnapping that led to the extortion of N2.5m from her husband based in South Africa.
The command said the suspects were arrested by operatives of its Special Squad after investigations revealed that a reported abduction was fabricated.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the police said a distress call was received on November 24, 2025, from the woman’s husband, who alleged that his wife had been kidnapped by armed men demanding N10m ransom, later reduced to N3m.
The police said N2.5m was eventually paid, but the supposed kidnappers failed to release the victim, prompting further investigation by security operatives.
Following intelligence-led operations, Mrs Bada was later released and reunited with her family, after which she told investigators that she was abducted by six armed men in a Toyota Venza and robbed of her iPhone 12 Pro Max.
However, the command said inconsistencies in her account raised suspicion, leading to deeper investigation that resulted in the arrest of Daniel in Ede, Osun State, on December 3, 2025.
A SIM card used to create the WhatsApp account through which the ransom negotiations were conducted was recovered from Daniel, who reportedly confessed that he assisted Mrs Bada by providing the SIM card and one-time password.
The police said Mrs Bada later admitted to faking her own abduction to extort money from her husband, while her iPhone was recovered from a buyer who claimed he purchased it from her.
Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, warned against false reports capable of diverting security resources, assuring residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
Police authorities said investigations were ongoing and that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the probe.
