A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State and former senatorial aspirant for Ondo Central, Tola Awosika, has faulted the reported third-term ambition of a member of the House of Representatives, Abiola Makinde, urging him to abandon the plan.
Awosika, in a statement on Monday, described the alleged move as politically unjustifiable, insisting that the lawmaker should consider stepping aside to allow fresh faces emerge in the interest of fairness and inclusiveness.
Recounting his own political experience, the former aspirant said he invested heavily in his 2022 senatorial ambition but was discouraged by party leaders who allegedly told him it was not the turn of Ondo Central to produce a senator.
He, however, expressed surprise that one of the same political actors is now reportedly eyeing the Senate seat but has allegedly been told there is no space, a development he said raises questions about consistency within the party.
Awosika argued that the decision to instead pursue a third term in the House of Representatives reflects a lack of political foresight and equity, warning against what he described as the recycling of the same individuals in public office.
“Why can’t you go back to private life like some of us and still help your people?” he asked, emphasizing that public service should not be limited to holding office.
He maintained that despite his setback in the 2022 primaries, he has continued to contribute to the development of his constituency, stressing the need to give opportunities to new leaders with innovative ideas.
Awosika also alleged irregularities during the party primaries, claiming that although he secured considerable delegate support, including victory in a key ward, he was edged out through political manoeuvres.
“What was a weapon for your last fight may not give you victory in this one,” he said.
While stating that he is not currently seeking any elective position, Awosika affirmed his resolve to remain active in the political space and continue advocating for broader participation in leadership.
“The game has just started,” he added, noting that his focus remains on ensuring better representation and opportunities for the people of Ondo Central.
