Malami’s return from detention draws massive crowd, lifts ADC profile

Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has returned to Kebbi State after months of detention, drawing a large crowd of supporters in a development seen as boosting the fortunes of the African Democratic Congress in the state.

Malami’s homecoming followed his release from custody after spending over three months in detention.

He was initially arrested on December 8, 2025, after honouring an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and was granted bail on March 22, 2026.

Despite his release, he remained in Abuja for several days before eventually returning to Kebbi, where he received a rousing welcome from supporters.

Eyewitnesses described the reception as one of the largest political gatherings in the state in recent times, with thousands of residents thronging major roads to welcome the former minister. Supporters were seen waving party flags and chanting slogans in a show of solidarity.

The atmosphere was marked by jubilation as convoys of vehicles and crowds lined the streets to welcome Malami, whose political influence in Kebbi has remained significant.

His detention, which also involved the Department of State Services, had generated widespread reactions, with many of his loyalists alleging political undertones.

Observers say the massive turnout at his return signals a resurgence of his political base and could reshape alignments ahead of the 2027 governorship election in the state.

Malami’s supporters have continued to portray him as a leading opposition figure, with his return seen as strengthening the position of the ADC against the ruling party.

Political analysts note that the development may set the stage for a keenly contested race in Kebbi, as permutations for the next election cycle gradually gather momentum.
