Ondo APC dismisses controversy over support group registration, seeks unity

The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has faulted criticisms trailing its directive mandating support groups to register with the party, describing opposition to the move as misleading and capable of causing disunity.

The party said the directive was aimed at strengthening coordination and unity among groups mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election, rather than an attempt to stifle participation.

In a statement issued on Monday by the State Publicity Secretary, Otunba Kayode Muyide, the APC said the decision was a routine administrative measure designed to streamline activities and align support groups with the party’s structure.

The party was reacting to what it described as a “tendentious” statement by a group claiming to be working for the President, which allegedly misrepresented the intent of the directive.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the directive is neither coercive nor punitive. It is aimed at fostering synergy and ensuring that all groups operate in alignment with the party’s objectives in Ondo State,” the statement read.

The APC expressed concern that some individuals had attempted to politicise the issue and disparage the leadership of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the party hierarchy, warning that such actions could undermine cohesion ahead of future elections.

It maintained that registration of support groups was a standard practice within political parties, particularly during election cycles, as it helps to prevent duplication of efforts, promote discipline, and enhance effective mobilisation.

The party also dismissed claims that the directive was targeted at suppressing certain groups, insisting that it was intended to harmonise and amplify their contributions within a unified framework.

According to the statement, the current leadership of the party under the State Chairman, Kolawole Babatunde, has prioritised inclusivity, reconciliation, and stakeholder engagement since assuming office.

“It is misleading to portray the directive as an act of vendetta. Rather, it is designed for the collective interest of the party,” the APC added.

The party called on support groups and stakeholders to embrace the initiative and work together towards strengthening its structure in the state.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to openness and collaboration with all members, stressing the need for unity in pursuit of electoral success.
