The Nigeria Police Force in Nasarawa State has arrested a 37-year-old cleric, Asonye Isaiah, over the alleged assault of a 16-year-old girl in Karshi, Karu Local Government Area.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday, noting that the arrest followed a complaint reported at the Karshi Police Division on April 18, 2026.
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect allegedly deceived the victim’s aunt by claiming the teenager required spiritual cleansing.
“He instead took the victim to a location in New Karshi, where the alleged incident occurred,” the statement read.
The police added that the matter came to light after the victim’s guardian noticed changes in her behaviour and raised concerns.
“The victim was subsequently taken for medical examination, which supported the complaint,” Nansel stated.
He further disclosed that the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for thorough investigation and possible prosecution.
The commissioner assured that justice would be pursued, while also advising members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
